This was demonstrated by the fleets built in anticipation of wars. For example, a year before the Battle of Lepanto (AD 1571), the Venetians managed, within a limited span of a few months, to build some 40 brand-new galleys. The Ottomans, for their part, after that battle, which brought about the complete destruction of their fleet, built 150 galleys within about 12 months. We should point out that the method of rapid construction did not result in sloppiness; on the contrary, we note the greatest attention to detail and decoration, often consisting of extremely expensive gilded carved wood, elements that, without exaggeration, gave the galley the character of a luxury yacht. The chief contributors to this were the gifted commanders of the galleys (sopracomiti), who were nobles and possessed extensive knowledge of naval warfare. They often showed a tendency to identify emotionally with their ship, which they regarded as their personal property. The design of the galley depended entirely on the number and weight of the rowers, so that its operational performance would not be affected. A typical galley (gallia sotil) was about 41 meters long, 5 meters wide, with a draft of 1.2 meters and a displacement of 200 tons. It had 72 oars on each side and about 144 rowers. The usual number of rowers on each bench, at that time, in the galleys of Venice was three. Later, on larger galleys (gallia grosse) and on the galleys of other nations, we find more.

Source: Bicheno, 2006: Hugh Bicheno, “The Battle of Lepanto, 1571,” translated by Charikleia Tsaligopoulou, edited by Eleni Kekropoulou (Athens: Enalios, 2006).

[88

post-4065","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-peiratika-skaria
["GET
